Two portly gentleman enter Scrooge’s counting-house on the morning of Christmas Eve, seeking donations for the “Poor and destitute” of London. Due to Scrooge’s renowned wealth, the gentlemen assume that Scrooge will donate a sum of some sort. However, Scrooge staunchly declines, selfishly pointing towards “prisons” and other established institutions as suitable means of support.
