The narrative voice adopted by Charles Dickens is a unique one, which augments the dynamic nature of the storytelling in the novella. The narrator’s tone varies with the emotions of the characters: it morphs smoothly from elated, to dreary, to other various emotions. It is sometimes permeated by exclamatory statements, and in other passages, is largely devoid of them.
