Gerald symbolises the upper class aristocracy. Heir to a title and a prosperous competitor of Mr Birling, he is the typical respectable man-about-town and an ideal candidate for Sheila to marry. He is suave and charming from the outset, polite to each member of the Birling family. He is shown to agree with many of Mr Birling’s beliefs, is cordial to Mrs Birling, tender with Sheila, and friendly but indifferent to Eric. His alliance with Mr Birling continues throughout the investigations, highlighting his support for the values of the capitalist society that has enabled them both to thrive.
