Jane Fairfax

Mr Campbell, who was a friend of Jane’s father, took Jane in when she was young and orphaned. This is a similar predicament to Frank, but the only difference is that she will not inherit anything. She is also Miss Bates’s niece and, on this basis, visits Highbury. She is quite reserved but loved by all for her sweetness. This threatens Emma as they are the same age, often compared, and Jane rivals Emma in accomplishments, including the pianoforte. However, Jane is financially insecure and is on the path to become a governess.
