He is the widowed father of Frank Churchill who is currently married to Emma’s governess Miss Taylor. Mr Weston’s first marriage was to Miss Churchill, which was scandalous at the time due to their differences in social class. Miss Churchill unfortunately passed away and so Mr Weston gave Frank to his wife’s aunt and uncle to be raised amongst high society. Mr Weston retired from his position as a captain in the army and went into a trade where he amassed enough money to afford a reasonable property in Highbury. At the beginning of the novel, he has just married Miss Taylor and is shown to be a good man who is sociable amongst all Highbury’s residents. There is some ambiguity regarding his feelings towards his son being raised with the Churchills, which becomes a source of conversation between the Knightleys and Woodhouses.
