Formerly Augusta Hawkins, she becomes Mrs Elton by marriage after meeting Mr Elton in Bath. She is shallow and enjoys being the centre of attention by parading her wealth and connections, with her superficiality overpowering her accomplishments and status. Mrs Elton is presented as silly and overbearing, clashing with Emma as Austen juxtaposes their inconsideration of others. While Emma transforms into a kind person by the denouement of the novel, Augusta has no such transformation.
