Biddy, being Mr Wopsle’s great-aunt’s granddaughter, plays a multifaceted role throughout Great Expectations as Pip’s teacher, friend, voice of reason, and contrasting love interest to Estella. As such, throughout the narrative, Biddy’s character is used as a reflection of Pip’s constantly evolving worldview, yet she consistently upholds the same honourable, proletarian values of authenticity and empathy representing the comfort and fulfilment of the working-class life that Pip endeavours to escape.
