Similarly to Joe, Herbert demonstrates the honourable values of loyalty and friendship, prioritising his relationship with Pip over the corrupted, materialistic values of the upper class. As such, Dickens often juxtaposes Herbert’s virtuousness and generosity to the increasing self-centredness and arrogance of Pip who is blinded by his ambitions for wealth and status. Ultimately, Herbert is portrayed by Dickens as an authentic exemplar of companionship, standing by Pip throughout his rise and fall in prospects and subsequently being rewarded with contentment in his job and marriage to his beloved Clara.
