Wemmick

John Wemmick, known predominately as just Wemmick throughout the novel, is Mr Jaggers’ clerk who strikes up an authentic friendship with Pip. He is portrayed by Dickens as a peculiar man with a distinct separation between his work life and personal life. Whilst at work, Wemmick is the cynical and stern embodiment of economically driven values, persistently lecturing Pip about the importance of “portable property,” yet it turns out that this seriousness is a façade when contrasted to his jovial, good-humoured, and tender nature when existing at his home in Walworth.
