Heart of Darkness

Marlow meets the Brick-maker in the Central Station. When taken into the man’s office, Marlow discovers that the Brick-maker is in possession of a number of “trophies” – including a “silver mounted dressing table” and a “whole candle to himself”, despite the fact that the agents were not supposed to possess candles. The extensive wealth of the Brick-maker is particularly ironic considering that he has not succeeded in actually making any bricks. Once again, the Brick-maker is a paradigm of European exploitation and complacency.
