Douglas

Henry IV Part 1

Douglas is basically the Scottish version of Hotspur! He is one of the rebels who Hotspur initially captures on the king’s behalf, but the Percys then free him and join forces. Douglas and Hotspur respect each other greatly, and although Hotspur has defeated him in combat a few times, the two are almost equally matched in terms of their courage, fighting prowess, and reckless disregard for political realities. Douglas is the one who kills Sir Walter Blunt, and he is enraged by Henry’s use of counterfeit kings at the battle. He nearly kills Henry, but Hal fights him off and he is later taken prisoner. In the closing lines of the play, Hal grants Douglas his freedom in recognition for his bravery even though he fought for the rebels.
