A theme is a message or a broad idea the playwright wants the audience to learn. Plays will have a variety of themes that are explored over the course of the plot. A few common themes that are typically explored in dramatic works are ideas such as love, family, revenge, good vs evil, and the nature of power – note how all these themes are abstract ideas.
