Character strategies

As in any play, novel, or film, it is through the characters that we engage with the themes and moral complexities of Shakespeare’s plays. His rich language, dramatic techniques and complex social commentary all operate through the audience’s involvement with his characters. While we might not expect to immediately identify with a character in a play written more than 400 years ago, many of them display universal human characteristics and emotions which continue to make us interested in their stories.
