Charles Bingley

Pride and Prejudice

If Jane is a foil to Elizabeth, Bingley is a foil to Darcy. Bingley is much like Jane in temperament, though more confident and self-assured, though not vain. As Jane describes him, he is “sensible, good-humored, lively; and I never saw such happy manners! – so much ease, with such perfect good breeding!” and this sentiment is shared by all the other characters. Really, it is impossible to dislike Bingley, although his overwhelming cheerfulness and apparent lack of faults has made some critics accuse him, like Jane, of being dull.
