Benvolio

Romeo and Juliet

Benvolio is Montague’s nephew. He is law abiding and peaceful in his temperament and he always attempts to break up a quarrel before usually, like in the opening scene, ending up embroiled in it. He is very fond of his cousin Romeo and does not take his melancholic behaviour over his unrequited love for Rosaline very seriously. Instead he uses a different tactic and attempts to cure Romeo of his passion for Rosaline by introducing him to other beautiful women at the Capulet feast. In the trio of him, Romeo, and Mercutio, he is very much the calm individual, who tries to prevent situations from escalating. When Romeo kills Tybalt, it is Benvolio who convinces him to flee the scene and he does his very best to excuse his cousin’s poor choice of action to the Prince of Verona.
