After the Capulet party has finished Romeo slips away from both Benvolio and Mercutio and returns to the Capulets orchard (garden). Mercutio and Benvolio, realising that Romeo has given them the slip, start searching for him and yelling out his name. After a while they give up, deciding that Romeo simply does not want to be found, since “blind is his love and best befits the dark.” This line uses imagery to demonstrate that Romeo has slipped into the darkness in order to pursue his true love. However, at this point in time both Benvolio and Mercutio believe this is still Rosaline.
