The Handmaid's Tale

Offred’s husband, Luke, is only seen through fragments of Offred’s memory, as she has flashbacks to the times before Gilead’s formation, and leading up to their capture. The two of them appeared to have had a loving, trusting, and romantic relationship, having fallen in love when Luke was still married to his previous wife. However, his views, personality, and beliefs become questionable when Offred loses her job and all her money, and Luke responds with indifference and apathy. Offred is unsure whether he enjoyed the power he subsequently held over her, and the reader is left wondering whether he too, like the leaders of Gilead, held sexist and misogynistic beliefs. Nonetheless, he appeared to be completely devoted to his family, and did the best he could to smuggle his family out of the increasingly tense political situation they were in, whilst also attempting to keep Offred’s spirits up.
