Nick holds a position as a Guardian and is the Commander’s chauffeur. Ever since the beginning of the novel, his behaviour has always appeared to be casual and indifferent to Gilead’s rules, and borderline rebellious. For example, he winks at Offred, and rolls up the sleeves of his uniform in a show of confidence and nonchalance. Despite Offred’s initial suspicions of Nick, he is considered trustworthy enough by many members of the household, including the Commander, Serena, and eventually Offred, who all confide in him and involve him in their secret and illegal operations. However, his intentions, thoughts, and beliefs are kept relatively hidden throughout the novel, especially demonstrated when Offred notices that “he barely asks questions,” and “he seems indifferent to most of what I have to say.” This ambiguity and uncertainty in his character is further accentuated at the very end of the novel, when Nick seemingly organises Offred’s escape. However, Offred is unsure of whether or not he is truly a member of the Mayday resistance or is secretly an Eye. The reader never finds out where his faith truly lies, elucidating the inability for individuals to build trusting relationships and connections in a society that is oppressive, obscure, and breeds suspicion and fear.
