Auxin
- Plants use chemical messengers called hormones, similar to humans.
- Auxins are a family of hormones that coordinate growth at the tips of shoots and roots.
- Auxins are often referred to in the singular form as "orin."
- Auxins are primarily produced in the tips of growing shoots and roots and diffuse to other parts of the plant.
- Auxins coordinate plant growth by altering the rate at which plant cells elongate.
- More auxin leads to faster growth or more elongation of plant cells.
- Auxins help plants grow in specific directions by uneven distribution within plant cells.
- If more auxin is present on one side of a plant, it causes the plant to curve towards the opposite side.
- Stems and roots react differently to high concentrations of auxin; stems grow more while roots grow less.
- Understanding the different responses to auxin in stems and roots is crucial for learning about various plant tropisms.
