Gene Theory
- Gene theory posits that characteristics are passed to offspring through units called genes.
- Genes are located on chromosomes within the cell nucleus.
- Gene theory evolved from the work of many scientists, primarily after Mendel's death in the late 19th century.
- Observations of chromosomes during cell division post-Mendel helped understand the science behind his observations.
- The 23 pairs of chromosomes in human cells (except gametes) were crucial in developing gene theory.
- Early 20th-century observations showed that chromosomes and Mendel's units behaved similarly, confirming genes are on chromosomes.
- Mid 20th-century discoveries included the structure of DNA, identified by Watson and Crick with contributions from Rosalind Franklin and Morris Wilkins.
