  • Genetically modified (GM) crops are plants artificially modified to increase yields.
  • "Yield" refers to the amount of crop produced.
  • GM crops are also known as genetically modified crops.
  • For exams, specific examples of GM crops are not required, but understanding the four main ways crops are modified is necessary.
  • GM crops have been engineered to be resistant to diseases and to produce bigger, better fruits.
  • Genetic engineering has been used to give certain crops resistance to fungus, make apples bigger, and prevent them from going brown.
  • GM crops include those made resistant to insect attacks and herbicides.
  • Herbicide-resistant crops allow nearby weeds to be killed without harming the crops themselves.
