Increasing Blood Glucose Levels
- When we haven't eaten or have used a lot of energy, blood glucose levels decrease.
- Cells need a constant glucose supply for respiration to release energy for life's processes.
- The body maintains blood glucose levels between meals through the conversion between glucose and glycogen.
- High blood glucose levels are decreased by converting glucose into glycogen for storage.
- Low blood glucose levels are increased by converting glycogen back into glucose.
- Glucagon is the hormone that increases blood glucose levels by converting glycogen back to glucose.
- Insulin converts glucose into glycogen.
- It's important to distinguish between the terms glycogen and glucagon in spelling and pronunciation.
- The pancreas produces glucagon when it detects low blood glucose levels.
- Glucagon acts on the liver and muscle cells to convert glycogen back into glucose.
- Glycogen is primarily stored in the liver and muscle cells, not in all body cells.
- The released glucose from glycogen conversion increases blood glucose levels.
- This process is an example of homeostasis and is important for exams.
