Malaria
- Malaria is caused by a protist pathogen.
- Multiple protists can cause malaria, but only the general cause (protists) is necessary for the exam.
- Malaria is transmitted through mosquitoes, which act as vectors.
- Mosquitoes carry the protists and transfer them to humans through their saliva during a bite.
- The lifecycle of the malaria-causing protist includes development within the mosquito.
- The term "vector" refers to organisms that carry pathogens and spread infections.
- Malaria infection can cause repeated fever episodes and can be fatal.
- Protists travel to the liver via the bloodstream, reproduce, and then re-enter the bloodstream.
- Malaria can be treated with drugs, but there is no vaccine available, and it still results in fatalities.
- Control measures for malaria include using nets and insect repellents to prevent mosquito bites.
- Nets act as a physical barrier to protect individuals from mosquito bites.
- Insecticides are used to kill mosquitoes and treating standing water prevents mosquito breeding.
- Reducing mosquito breeding helps control the spread of malaria.
