Phloem
- Phloem tissue is part of the plant organ system responsible for transport.
- It is depicted in blue in a cross-section of a stem.
- Phloem moves dissolved sugars in the form of sap throughout the plant.
- Sugars are produced in the leaves during photosynthesis.
- These sugars are then transported to be used immediately or stored for later use.
- Sugars can be used for growth or stored in parts like tubers, such as potatoes.
- Phloem tissue can move dissolved sugars both upwards and downwards in the plant.
- The movement of sugars is facilitated by cells on the outside that provide energy.
- Phloem tissue consists of tubes made from elongated living cells.
- The end walls of these cells have pores that allow cell sap to move through.
- These features are specifically adapted for the transport of dissolved sugars.
- The structure of phloem, including elongated cells with pores in their end walls, enables the movement of sap and dissolved sugars throughout the plant.
