Root Hair Cells
- Root hair cells are located in the roots near the xylem tissue.
- These cells are covered with tiny hairs known as root hairs.
- Root hair cells have adaptations that enable efficient absorption of water and mineral ions.
- The presence of root hairs increases the surface area, allowing more water and minerals to enter the plant.
- Root hair cells contain numerous mitochondria, which provide energy for active transport of mineral ions.
- Active transport is a process that moves minerals into root hair cells against their concentration gradient.
- Root hair cells also have a large permanent vacuole that facilitates faster movement of water into the cells by osmosis.
- The proximity of root hair cells to the xylem facilitates the transport of water and ions to the rest of the plant.
