  • A synapse is a gap that connects two neurons.
  • Synapses allow information to travel from one neuron to another in a specific direction.
  • Information travels within neurons as an electrical impulse.
  • At the synapse, the electrical impulse is converted to a chemical signal.
  • Chemicals travel across the synapse via diffusion.
  • These chemicals move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
  • Upon reaching the opposite side of the synapse, chemicals bind to the membrane of the next neuron, triggering an electrical impulse.
