The Nervous System
- The nervous system detects environmental changes and coordinates responses.
- Responses include moving away from perceived dangers, such as a bee.
- A stimulus is a change in the environment, like seeing a bee; the plural is stimuli.
- The response to a stimulus, such as a bee, might be moving in the opposite direction.
- The nervous system consists of a network of neurons (nerve cells) that extend throughout the body.
- Neurons transmit information as electrical impulses from one end to the other.
- The central nervous system (CNS) is composed of the brain and spinal cord.
- The CNS uses neurons to process information and coordinate activities like catching a ball.
- In the process of catching a ball, the moving ball acts as a stimulus.
- Cells in the eye receive light and act as receptors, signaling that the ball is approaching.
- The brain, acting as a coordinator, decides on a response and communicates with effectors, such as muscles.
- The response, in this case, would be catching the ball, demonstrating the CNS's role as a coordinator in nervous responses.
- Neurons are long to facilitate message transmission over distances and are bundled together to form nerves.
- In exams, understanding the roles of stimuli, responses, nerve cells, and the CNS's function is crucial.
