Thermoregulation in Context

3:18 Control of Body Temperature
Spec 4.5.2.4
  • Specific environments pose unique challenges to our body's thermo-regulatory system.
  • Examples include playing football in humid conditions, running a marathon in a desert, and exploring the Arctic.
  • In humid conditions, high humidity prevents sweat from evaporating, reducing the body's ability to cool down, potentially leading to overheating.
  • Using external cooling methods like spraying water or using fans can help manage body temperature in humid environments.
  • In hot and dry conditions, excessive sweat evaporation can lead to dehydration unless sufficient fluids are consumed.
  • Dehydration can reduce sweating, increasing the risk of overheating.
  • Extremely cold environments can overwhelm the body's thermo-regulatory mechanisms like shivering and vasoconstriction, leading to dangerously low body temperatures and hypothermia.
  • Hypothermia can cause confusion, leading individuals to mistakenly feel overheated and undress.
  • Internal factors can also challenge the thermo-regulatory system, such as conditions in newborns, individuals with paraplegia, or those with brain tumors.
  • Newborns struggle with temperature regulation due to underdeveloped thermo-regulatory centers, inability to shiver or sweat effectively, and minimal body fat.
  • Individuals with paraplegia cannot shiver below the level of spinal damage and have reduced muscle mass, affecting heat production.
  • Brain tumors can damage the thermo-regulatory center, impairing temperature detection and the coordination of responses like vasodilation, vasoconstriction, sweating, and shivering.
