Clay Ceramics

2:02 Composition and Use of Different Materials
Spec 4.10.3.3
  • Clay ceramics include pottery and bricks.
  • Clay is a natural soil material mined from the earth.
  • When wet, clay becomes soft and easy to shape.
  • Clay is useful for pottery, crafts, and molding into bricks for construction.
  • Clay ceramics are made by molding wet clay into shapes and heating them in a kiln.
  • The kiln heats the clay to temperatures above a thousand degrees centigrade in a process called firing.
  • Firing results in clay that has hardened permanently.
  • Clay ceramics are hard, unreactive, resistant to heat, and can withstand high pressures.
  • These properties make clay suitable for making bricks with high compressive strength.
  • Clay bricks do not burn or react with air and water, making them ideal for building strong walls and structures.
