Titration Calculations
- Titration results can determine the unknown concentration of a solution.
- Concentration in moles per decimeter cubed is calculated using: amount of solute in moles divided by volume in decimeters cubed.
- Formula triangle: C (concentration), N (number of moles), V (volume).
- Example titration: 28.5 cm�� of 1.0 mol/dm�� nitric acid neutralized by 25.0 cm�� of sodium carbonate.
- Precise measurements lead to precise concentration calculations.
- Reaction: 2 moles of nitric acid react with 1 mole of sodium carbonate.
- Calculate moles of known reactant (nitric acid) using the formula triangle.
- Convert volumes from cm�� to dm�� by dividing by 1000.
- Use the formula triangle to find the amount of solute (N) by multiplying concentration (C) and volume (V).
- Calculate moles of sodium carbonate using the ratio from the balanced equation.
- Calculate unknown concentration using the formula triangle: N divided by V.
- Convert concentration from moles/dm�� to grams/dm�� using relative formula mass.
- Example: Convert concentration of sodium carbonate to grams/dm�� using its relative formula mass (106).
- Another example: Calculate concentration of sodium hydroxide in grams/dm�� from titration with hydrochloric acid.
- Steps: List values, convert units, calculate moles, use reactant ratio, calculate unknown concentration, convert to grams/dm��.
- Use periodic table to find relative formula mass for conversions.
