Uses of Alloys

8:13 Composition and Use of Different Materials
Spec 4.10.3.2
  • Most metals in everyday use are alloys, which are mixtures of a metal element and at least one other element.
  • Alloys have a mixture of differently sized atoms, which can be different metals or a mixture of metals and non-metals.
  • Unlike pure metals, alloy atoms are not arranged in layers, making alloys stronger as there aren't layers that can easily slide over each other.
  • Examples of alloys:
  • Bronze: Alloy of copper and tin, used for bells, statues, medals, and trophies due to its hardness and corrosion resistance.
  • Brass: Alloy of copper and zinc, used for musical instruments, door handles, locks, and plumbing fixtures due to its malleability.
  • Gold alloys: Used in jewelry, typically mixed with silver, copper, and zinc to increase strength while maintaining shine.
  • Aluminium alloys: Used in airplane bodies for low density and improved strength.
  • Steels: Alloys of iron with carbon and other metals, including:
  • High carbon steel: Strong but brittle, used for railway tracks.
  • Low carbon steel: Softer and easily shaped, used for cans and pipes.
  • Stainless steels: Contain chromium and nickel, resistant to corrosion, used for cutlery.
  • Properties of alloys determine their uses, such as strength, malleability, and reactiveness.
  • In exams, students may need to evaluate alloy properties to determine suitability for specific applications.
  • Example question: Choosing the best alloy for copper wires based on conductivity and ductility, with the best choice being an alloy that is both conductive and ductile.
