Active Transport in Plants
- Mineral ions are essential for healthy plant growth.
- Comparison of a healthy plant with a flower and green leaves to a plant with a mineral deficiency.
- Mineral ions are found in very dilute concentrations in soil.
- Root hair cells, with a large surface area, specialize in absorbing water and nutrients from the soil.
- Mineral ions are present in lower concentrations outside the soil than inside the root hair cell.
- Plants absorb mineral ions from the soil through active transport, moving them up a concentration gradient, which requires energy.
- Once inside the root hair cell, mineral ions are transported to the rest of the plant via the xylem.
