Alloys
- Metals in the periodic table are known as pure metals.
- Metals are located on the left-hand side of the periodic table and are colored yellow in the video.
- Pure metals consist of atoms of the same type, arranged in layers.
- Atoms in pure metals are the same size and arranged regularly in individual layers.
- Layers in pure metals can slide over each other, allowing metals to be bent and shaped.
- Pure metals are malleable or bendable, making them too soft for many uses.
- Alloys are mixtures of metals and are common and useful.
- Brass is an example of an alloy, made from copper and zinc atoms.
- Metallic bonding occurs in alloys, maintaining a metallic structure with metallic bonds.
- Alloys are harder than pure metals.
- Different sized atoms in an alloy distort the layers of atoms in the structure.
- In brass, zinc and copper atoms are of different sizes, causing distorted layers.
- Distorted layers make it difficult for them to slide over each other, making alloys less bendable or shapeable.
