Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter How bonding and structure are related to the properties of substances

Bulk Properties & Particles

1:08 States of Matter
Spec 4.2.2.1
  • Substances around us are made up of trillions of atoms, molecules, or ions.
  • These are referred to as bulk material.
  • Example: Gold bars are considered bulk material made up of trillions of gold atoms.
  • Difference between atoms and bulk material:
  • Individual atoms do not have the physical properties of the bulk material they form.
  • These physical properties are called bulk properties.
  • Example: A block of ice (bulk material) has the bulk property of melting when heat is applied past its melting point.
  • An individual water molecule, however, cannot melt or have a melting point.
  • Conclusion: Individual atoms do not have melting or boiling points; only bulk materials do.
