Collision Theory & Reaction Rate
- In chemical reactions, three main factors can be changed: concentration or pressure of reactions, temperature, and surface area of solid reactants.
- These factors affect the rate of reaction.
- Collision theory states that chemical reactions occur when reactant particles collide with sufficient energy.
- The minimum energy required for particles to react is called activation energy.
- Not all collisions result in a reaction; only those with energy equal to or above the activation energy do.
- Reaction rates can be increased by increasing the number of collisions or the energy of the particles.
- More successful collisions lead to a higher reaction rate.
- Understanding collision theory helps in determining how to change conditions to affect reaction rates.
