Coronary Heart Disease
- Coronary heart disease is a non-communicable disease of the coronary arteries.
- It is a type of cardiovascular disease affecting the circulatory system.
- Arteries carry blood at high pressure from the heart to the organs.
- Coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with blood containing glucose and oxygen, allowing the heart to beat effectively.
- Coronary heart disease develops when fatty material builds up in the coronary arteries, causing narrowing and reduced flexibility of the artery walls.
- Causes of coronary heart disease include an unhealthy lifestyle, high blood pressure, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, high cholesterol, and a poor diet rich in saturated fats.
- High cholesterol is essential for cell membranes but can lead to cardiovascular disease if levels are high in the blood.
- Consequences of coronary heart disease include blocked coronary arteries, which prevent sufficient oxygenated blood from reaching the heart muscle.
- This can lead to a heart attack.
