Frequency
- Frequency of a wave is the number of full wavelengths passing a point in a second.
- A wave transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter.
- In a transverse wave, matter moves up and down, forming a repeating pattern.
- Wavelength is the distance across which there is exactly one cycle of the wave pattern.
- Frequency is measured by counting the number of peaks passing a point in one second.
- Example: If two peaks pass a point each second, the wave has a frequency of two hertz.
- Hertz is the standard unit for frequency, meaning cycles per second.
- Frequency can also be defined as the number of times the motion of matter in the wave repeats in a second.
- Observing a single oscillating particle in the wave can help measure frequency.
- Measuring frequency over several seconds can improve accuracy.
- Frequency is determined by how quickly waves are produced.
- Example: A person flicking a spring creates waves; the rate of flicking determines wave frequency.
- Understanding frequency and how to measure it is important for exams.
- Frequency affects the properties of a wave.
