Genes & Alleles
- Each chromosome carries a large number of genes.
- Genes are sections of DNA that provide instructions for making proteins.
- Gene A and Gene B are examples of genes on a chromosome, each responsible for making a specific protein (Protein A and Protein B).
- Genes influence certain characteristics within an organism.
- Human cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes, totaling 46.
- Humans inherit one copy of each chromosome and thus one copy of each gene from each parent.
- Different versions of the same gene are called alleles.
- Alleles are represented on chromosomes and can vary between the two chromosomes inherited from each parent.
- Understanding chromosomes, genes, and alleles is essential for genetics exams.
