  • Magnetic fields exist around any magnet, including bar magnets.
  • Magnetic fields exert forces on magnetic materials and other magnets, causing attraction or repulsion.
  • Magnetic fields can be visualized using a compass, which aligns with the magnetic field lines.
  • Steps to visualize magnetic fields with a compass:
  • 1. Place a compass near a magnet, starting near the north pole.
  • 2. Draw a dot in front of the north side of the needle.
  • 3. Move the compass so the south side of the needle aligns with the dot.
  • 4. Repeat the process to trace the field pattern.
  • 5. Draw a smooth line linking the dots to visualize the field lines.
  • 6. Repeat with different starting points to complete the field pattern.
  • Magnetic field lines are curved and run from one pole to another, common to all magnets.
  • Iron filings can be used to physically observe magnetic field lines.
  • Iron filings align with the magnetic field, showing the pattern of field lines.
  • Field lines are most concentrated at the poles, where magnetic forces are strongest.
  • Magnetic field lines indicate the direction of magnetic forces acting on the north pole of another magnet.
  • Field lines start at the north pole and end at the south pole, a universal trait of magnetic fields.
