Momentum as a Vector
- Momentum is a vector quantity with both magnitude and direction.
- The direction of an object's momentum and velocity are the same.
- Momentum is the product of mass (a scalar) and velocity (a vector).
- When adding momentum, if vectors are in the same direction, they are added together.
- If vectors are in opposite directions, the difference between them is calculated.
- Example: Two birds with the same speed and momentum in the same direction have a total momentum of 2P. If in opposite directions, the total momentum is zero.
- Momentum changes if the direction of velocity changes, similar to velocity changes with direction.
- Understanding momentum as a vector is crucial for exam questions.
- Momentum and velocity are linked to acceleration and forces.
