Plant Cloning

2:46 Stem Cell Uses and Risks
Spec 4.1.2.3
  • Stem cells from plants can be used to quickly and inexpensively produce plant clones.
  • Cloning allows for the production of genetically identical plants, such as only orange flowers from a variety of colors.
  • Cloning is used for economic reasons, such as cloning rare species or commercially popular flowers like roses and orchids to increase production and sales.
  • Farmers use cloning to replicate crops with desirable traits, such as disease or pest resistance, ensuring uniformity and reliability in crop production.
  • The cloning process involves cutting a small section of the stem, dipping it in rooting powder containing plant hormones to speed up cell differentiation, and then planting it in soil where it grows new roots.
  • Cloned plants have the same genetic makeup but may look different due to environmental factors like sunlight and nutrition during growth.
