Refraction
- Refraction is the effect of a wave changing direction as it travels from one medium to another.
- Transmission is the act of a wave traveling from one medium to another.
- Refraction occurs when transmission is at an angle.
- Example: Light traveling from air to glass changes direction, demonstrating refraction.
- Refraction can make objects appear in a different location than they actually are.
- Our brains assume light travels in a single direction, not accounting for refraction.
- Example: A coin at the bottom of a tub of water appears in a different location due to refraction.
- Different wavelengths of electromagnetic waves refract at different angles.
- A glass prism can demonstrate refraction by splitting white light into different colors.
- Refraction is not limited to light waves; it can occur in other types of waves.
- Example: Water waves in a ripple tank change direction when moving from deep to shallow water.
- Refraction can also be observed in mechanical waves like seismic and sound waves.
- The principle of refraction applies to any type of wave that can transmit through a boundary.
