Speed
- Speed measures the distance an object travels over time.
- Speed is a scalar quantity.
- Different objects, like a rabbit and a tortoise, have different speeds.
- Speed is measured in meters per second (m/s).
- Typical speeds for various movements:
- Walking: 1.5 m/s
- Running: 3 m/s
- Cycling: 6 m/s
- Factors affecting speed include muscle power and effort required.
- Typical speeds for transport with engines:
- Car: 30 m/s
- Train: 60 m/s
- Plane: 200 m/s
- Recognize sensible values for transport speeds rather than exact values.
- Typical maximum speeds are used on motorways or at high altitudes.
- Speeds of sound and light:
- Sound: 330 m/s
- Light in a vacuum: 3 x 10^8 m/s
- Speed values may vary depending on the medium they travel through.
- Recall typical speed values for exams.
