Tests for Gases
- Tests can detect and identify gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and chlorine.
- Hydrogen test: Place a burning splint at the open end of a test tube; if hydrogen is present, it will burn with a pop sound.
- Oxygen test: Insert a glowing splint into a test tube; if oxygen is present, it will relight the splint.
- Carbon dioxide test: Use lime water; if carbon dioxide is present, the lime water turns milky or cloudy.
- Chlorine test: Use damp litmus paper; if chlorine is present, the paper turns red and then bleaches white.
- For exams, recall tests and observations for hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and chlorine.
