  • A force does work when it causes a change in the displacement of an object.
  • Work is the transfer of energy by a force.
  • Example: Driving force moves a car by converting chemical energy in fuel to kinetic energy.
  • Kinetic energy (KE) is given to the car by the force.
  • If an object is not moving, no work is being done.
  • Example: Holding a weight with balanced forces results in no displacement and no work done.
  • Energy is still transferred to muscles, causing fatigue, even if no work is done.
  • A force does no work if it is perpendicular to an object's motion.
  • Example: A plane flying parallel to the ground has weight perpendicular to motion, so no work is done by the weight.
  • Weight does not affect displacement as it is balanced by up thrust.
  • Important to remember these facts to avoid losing marks in exams.
