Introduction to Circuits
- Circuits carry electrical current from a power source to components.
- Example circuit includes a cell (power source), a lamp (powered component), and a switch (controls circuit).
- Components are connected by electrical conductors, typically metal wires insulated with plastic.
- A complete loop from the power source is necessary for current flow.
- Circuits can have branching paths but must not allow current to return on itself.
- A closed loop is essential for current flow; breaking the loop stops the current.
- Circuit diagrams use symbols to represent components and connections.
- Symbols include lines and a plus for a cell, a circle with a cross for a bulb, and two circles with a line for a switch.
- Recognizing and drawing circuit symbols is important for exams.
- Cells generate electric currents using chemical energy and have positive and negative terminals.
- Batteries consist of two or more cells connected in series for more power.
- Switches manually break or complete a circuit to control current flow.
- Lamps illuminate when current flows through them, heating the filament to emit light.
- Components can be arranged in series (same branch) or parallel (separate branches).
- Series arrangement means all components are on the same path; parallel means separate paths.
