Protecting from EM Waves
- Exposure to harmful electromagnetic waves increases the risk of damage.
- High frequency waves like X-rays and gamma rays can ionize cells and cause cancer.
- Ultraviolet waves can cause sunburns or skin cancer.
- Risk of cancer increases with higher exposure to these waves.
- Precautions against ultraviolet waves include using sun cream, wearing a sunhat, sunglasses, staying in the shade, or limiting time outside.
- Exposure to X-rays and gamma rays is measured as radiation dose.
- Radiation dose is measured in verts or sv, but this unit is not required for exams.
- Common exposure to gamma waves includes eating bananas, which emit a small dose.
- Background radiation contributes to yearly exposure, averaging around two milli verts.
- X-ray scans expose individuals to X-rays, but the dose is less than yearly background radiation exposure.
- Concern about radiation dose is necessary when exposed to stronger sources for extended periods.
- X-rays and gamma rays are used in medical procedures, such as imaging bones and cancer treatment.
- Steps are taken to reduce radiation dose in medical procedures, like limiting the number of X-ray photos.
- Doctors track the number of procedures to manage cumulative radiation exposure.
- Medical staff operate equipment remotely to minimize their exposure.
- Shielding is used to protect staff from radiation.
- Suitable ways to reduce radiation exposure may be required in exams.
