Solar Energy
- Solar panels generate an electric current when light is directed at them.
- The sun is a significant energy resource, releasing a large amount of energy, heating the planet, and being the start of the food chain.
- Solar panels convert solar energy into an electric current by releasing electrons within the material.
- Solar panels produce less electricity compared to other resources.
- In the UK, solar panels contribute to the national grid or power individual homes and devices.
- Solar farms, consisting of hundreds of panels, contribute to the national grid by moving to face the sun.
- Solar panels can be used on homes as roof panels, reducing reliance on the national grid.
- Solar panels are used in devices like calculators, traffic lights, smartwatches, and power banks.
- Solar panels are less effective on cloudy days due to reduced sunlight and current production.
- Some countries use solar energy as a substitute for fossil fuels when conditions allow.
- Solar energy is renewable and clean, but fossil fuels are more reliable as they can be burned anytime.
- Switching between solar and fossil fuels is possible, using fossil fuels on cloudy days and solar power on sunny days.
- Advantages of solar power: clean, renewable, no pollution, near limitless, easy to set up, small, and cheap to build.
- Disadvantages of solar power: weather-dependent, low energy gain, requiring hundreds of panels to match fossil fuel output.
