Sublimation

1:34 Changing State
Spec 4.3.1.2
  • Sublimation is the process of a solid turning directly into a gas without becoming a liquid.
  • This process is rare, and examples of sublimation are not required for exams.
  • Sublimation occurs because substances cannot become liquids at certain pressures.
  • At low pressure, the liquid state of water cannot exist, allowing sublimation to occur.
  • An example of sublimation is carbon dioxide, which undergoes sublimation at room temperature.
  • Solid CO2, known as dry ice, sublimates at room temperature because it cannot be liquid at normal pressure.
