Use of Energy Resources
- Most energy resources are used to generate electricity, including fossil fuels, wind, solar, and hydroelectric power.
- Burning coal heats water to create steam, which spins a turbine connected to a generator to produce electricity.
- Electricity is easier to transport and transfer than other forms of energy.
- Electricity reaches homes via efficient overhead cables from the national grid.
- Electricity powers various appliances and machinery.
- Most transportation is powered by fuels made from oil, which is refined and separated into components like petrol.
- Fuels release energy when burnt and are used for transport such as planes, cars, and trains.
- Some transportation is powered by electricity to reduce environmental impact and carbon dioxide emissions.
- Cars and trains can run on electricity, but technology for electric planes is not yet developed.
- Natural gas is used for heating homes through boilers that burn the gas to release heat.
- Heating can also be provided by electricity, burning coal, oil, and biofuels.
- Biofuels made from plant materials are easier to source and burn.
- Electricity can be used for heating by transferring electrical energy into heat, such as in electric heaters.
- Understanding the use of resources and comparing differences between heating, electrical generation, and transport is important.
